急進派の英語つづり字改革案

部分的修正よりも 体系性を重視

穏健派の 改革案は 一般的傾向として、正書法全体を みわたすような 体系性は なく、不規則な ところ だけ を 部分的に 修正したり、簡略化 できる ところ だけ を 簡略化 したり する よう です。

たとえば、母音字+子音字+よまないe のパターンで母音字が「長音」(エイ、イー、アイ、オウ、ユー)であることをしめすとき。あてはまらない場合は語末の e を削除します。give, have, definite, engine, medicine, opposite

"When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking."

"When two vowels walk, the first one says its name."

"Restored English Spelling" では、つぎのように なります。
ai, ee, y, oa, ue --- 子音字の前
ay, e, I/y, o, u --- それ以外の場合

"RichSpel-Long" では、つぎのように なります。

ai, ee, ie, oa, ue --- 全般的に

-ay, --, --, -o, -- --- 語末・長い単語の一部で

http://spellingsociety.org/uploaded_views/richspel-long-personal-view.pdf

ai(全般的) maid
ay(語末など) day
ee (全般的)feed
ie (全般的)pie
oa (全般的)float
o (語末など)ago
ue (全般的)cue
situate は situait に なる。ue の e が はぶかれる。

"Regspel" では、/エイ/・/イー/・/アイ/・/オウ/・/ユー/ が、つぎのように なります。

Regspel 書記素 IPA 単語例 Regspelでの つづり
ae, ay maid, stay maed, stay
ee i: feed, lead feed, leed
ie, y island, my ieland, my
o(e) əʊ or oʊ foe, flow, banjo fo(e), flo(e), banjo(e)
ue, ew, eu ju: union, stew, Europe uenion, stew, Europ

マジック e の パターンを つかわず、ae, ee, ie, oe, ue を 基本に すえて、そのほかに つづり の パターンを いくつか みとめるということ。

be, he, me, she, we, I, U など は、そのまま。-old も そのまま(gold, sold)。あるはずの e を はぶく ということらしい。(リンクさき 9ページ。)

/ai/(アイ)の おと に ie と y の 2つ を 対応させているのは すばらしい。

ちなみに、語末の -y は、/-i/ も /-ai/ も あらわしうる。simply, my.

短音は a, e, i, o, u」「2. 長音は ae, ee, ie, oe, ue」「3. よまない文字をかかない」「4. たいていの二重子音字をやめる」「5. 子音つづりの単純化」など。

https://americanliteracy.github.io/ts/soundspel/

SOUNDSPEL IS BASED ON SIMPLE RULES

  1. Short vowels are a single letter, as in: sat, set, did, dot, cut
  2. Long vowels are followed immediately by an e, as in: sundae, see, die, toe, cue
  3. No silent letters
  4. Most double letters are removed
  5. Consonants such as f, s, j have a consistent, single sound and spelling
  1. 「みじかい」a, e, i, o, u は、1つ の もじ で つづる。
  2. 「ながい」ae, ee, ie, oe, ue は、じかに e を くっつける。(分割二重音字をつかわない。)
  3. よまない もじ は かかない。(knot, hour が not, our と おなじ つづり。)

license, once, since を liesenss, wunss, sinss などと かきます。そして、ll に ついては、all だけをそのままにして、ball, call, fall, tall, wall を baul, caul, faul, taul, waul のように書きます。語中の rr を容認します(carry, cherry, horror)。off も容認。

5番目のルール補足。(focusjog)

f の音は f の文字。elephant の ph や tough の gh は、f の文字で おきかえます。

c の文字は /k/ だけをあらわします。cat, cost, cut. (keep, kid などの k は、そのまま。)

s の文字は /s/ だけをあらわします。city の c は s に おきかえられて sity に。

j の文字は j の音だけをあらわします。 giraffe は、jiraf に。gym は、jim に。

g の文字は /g/ だけをあらわします。get, gap.

その5つには、もともとあったはずの oo /u:/ と uu /U/ の つかいわけ が ふくまれていません。さいわいなことです。この2つ の くべつ は かなり まぎらわしいので。

Rつき母音のつづりのルールもありません。earth が erth か urth かで ゆれていたから なのかもしれません。

つづいて、つづりかえ の みほん が しめされます。

SoundSpel (americanliteracy.github.io)

IN SOUNDSPEL, WORDS ARE SPELLED AS THEY SOUND.

hat, have, laugh, plaid

→ hat, hav, laf, plad

red, head, said, friend

→ red, hed, sed, frend

herd, earth, birth, journey

→ hurd, urth, burth, jurny

roll, hole, soul, goal, bowl

→ roel, hoel, soel, goel, boel

tough, love, judge, tongue

→ tuf, luv, juj, tung

phone, city, gorgeous

→ foen, sity, gorjus

knight, receipt, asthma

→ niet, reseet, azma

そのあとの 使用例(GETTYSBURG ADDRESS IN SOUNDSPEL)では、birth と earth が burth, urth など と なっていました。かつて の ルール では、berth, erth でしたが、ルールが あたらしくなった(2022)ようです。

-er- と -ur- の つかいわけ が あります。(ex. murder, turner)

no はそのまま、know が "noe" になる。)
  • /k/の音に対して c も k も みとめる。(ただし、sic/sik、scul/skul の くべつをしない。)
  • /kw/の音を "q" で 表記する。queen, quest は "qeen", "qest" に なる。
  • oi, oy ともに /オイ/ の音をあらわす。(oister, coin, soil, boy, boyish, employ, toy)
  • ou, ow ともに /アウ/ の音を 表記する。out, now, power.(aloud と alowd = allowed の つづり の くべつ が できる。foul と fowl の くべつ は しない。)
  • au, aw ともに /オー/ の音を 表記する。laun(lawn), law, paw.
  • all は、そのままだが、 ball, call, fall, tall, wall などは、baul, caul, faul, taul, waul に。

Scheme: RichSpel-Long Author: Richard Kilner

Brief Summary

RichSpel-Long (RSL) provides very predictable spelling.

不要な文字は とりのぞかれる。例外的に、as I, she, his, this, was, has, of, be, by など、そのまま。of と off も。

それぞれの 文字 および 文字 の くみあわせ は、ひとつの音をあらわす。

あたらしく 4つの文字の くみあわせを 導入。

thh, as in thhin (thin);

xs, as in exspert (expert];

zh, as in mezher (measure);

uu, as in wuud (would).

"q" の文字は、"qu" としては もちいない。quit は qit に なる。

5つの「ながい」母音は、ai, ee, ie, oa, ue になる。as in maid, feed, pie, float, and cue.

(find, wild が、それぞれ fiend, wield に なってしまう。"Lytspel" では、fynd, wyld に なる。)

語末では、-ay と -o も。such as day and ago.

(do, to, doe, toe で 混乱する おそれ あり。)

母音が連続するとき、たとえば、situate は situait に なる。

所有格のアポストロフィーは省略。

isn't, let's, she'd などのアポストロフィーは のこる。

過去形の -(e)d は、e を発音するときは -ed で、そのほかのときは -d のみ。

複数や三単現の -(e)s は、ほぼ そのまま。

弱母音は e が原則。(ただし、第1音節ではそうではない。about の a は、そのまま。)

-sion と -tion を そのままにする。vision, naition(nation).

(ちなみに、question は "qestshen" に なる らしい。)

y は、yes と simply の よう な つかいかた のみ。ただし、by と my だけは 例外。

/k/ は、c も k も つかう。

aa も あるが、たとえば master は master/maaster など とは くべつ せず そのまま。

Lytspel

Lytspel(ライトスペル)も、マジック e を つかわない つづりじ改革案 です。そして、おと と もじ は かならずしも 1たい1 に たいおう している わけ では ありません。/k/ は c も k も つかいますし、sh の おと は sh だけではなく、-tion も つかわれます。

2020ねんに スペリングソサエティで おこなわれていた 6つの改革案の人気投票。そのなかのひとつに Lytspelも ふくまれていました。

http://spellingsociety.org/uploaded_views/lytspel-personal-view.pdf

Word-signs

The use of word signs is considered essential for an easy transition to a reading knowledge of the present spelling. The existing spelling is retained in actual proper names and in adjectives formed from such proper names (England, English, etc), in foreign words which have not been naturalized (régime, table d'hôte), and in the following very common words used as word-signs:

as, be, been, by, do, has, he, her, his, how, I, is, me, my, now, of, off, she, than, that, the, their, them, then, there, these, they, this, tho, those, tcl, was, we, were, what, who, whole, whom, whose, why, with, you, your, also use ful for full, and in suffixes, -ful. (total - 43).

ANGLIC AND THE ANGLIC MUUVMENT.
BY PROFESSOR R. E. ZACHRISSON, of The Royal University, Uppsala, Sweden.

The vaast majority ov reedrs who hav givn time and thaut to this importent questtion wil probably agree with me on the foloing points:

(1) That in the interests ov Pees, Comers, and Culture, the civilized Nations ov the Wurld wil be bound to establish an International Langgwidg to be comonly uzed by the side ov the naetiv tungs.

(2) That oenly a living Langgwidg can be adopted for this purpos.

(3) That English must be chozen, becauz it has the simplest structure and the lardgest circulation, being spoken by mor than tuu hundrid milion peepl and being aulso the administrativ Langgwidg ov five hundrid milions, which meens that it is in curent use arming wun thurd part ov the wurld's population.

Neerly 100 yeers agoe wun ov the wurld's gratest filolodgists, Jacob Grimm, exprest himself as folos on the chaansis ov English as a wurld-langgwidg: "When we considr its richnis, intelectuality and condenst adaptability no wun ov aul udhr living langgwidgis mae be plased at the side ov English not eevn our German Langgwidg. Did not a whimzical, antiquated oythografy stand in the wae the ueniversality ov this Langgwidg wood be stil mor evident."

Not onely Jacob Grimm but evribody who has had the time and oportuenity ov seeriusly considring these matrs - from Queen Elizabeth's Chaanselr Sur Thomas Smith, who in 1568 publisht the furst wurk we pozes on English speling reform, til eny modern reprezentativ ov English filolodgy - wil hav to admit that ov aul langgwidgis ov culture English has the most antiquated, inconsistent and ilodgical speling. It is antiquated becauz it pictures a pronunsiation which has becum obsoleet long befor Shakespeare's time, it is inconsistent becauz its forty od sounds ar spelt in noe les than 500 diferent waes, it is ilodgical becauz meny ov its forms, e.g., debt, victuals, delight, heart, hearken ar fauls, in so far as they do not record pronunsiations which were in curent use at an urly date - such spelings ar from a linggwistik point ov vue meer Frankenstein monstrs.

It is not oenly the English speeking comuenitys, but the hole wurld that has to sufr from this unsatisfactery state ov things, for in its prezent orthografical garb English is not fitid for its hie mision ov becuming the ueniversl tung. Speling reforms hav been paast reesently in Germany and Sweden, sistems ov fonetik speling hav been dezined for Russian, Turkish, and Chinese - but England stil prides herself upon an orthografy which raadhr represents King Alfred's pronunsiation than that ov His Majesty King George the Fifth. Mae be, that the comon locution "the King's English" has oridginated in this wae.

The vaerius orthografical sistems which hav been framed reesently for the purpos ov rectifieng the English cacografy ar admirably thaut out and ar wurdhy ov the gratest consideration, but they deeviate tun much from the prezent speling, or ar tuu unsetld, with regard to deetales, imeedietly to have any chaansis ov being adoptid for jeneral practical purposis.

If we want to succeed we must wurk acording to the maxim, "Bild for the masis, and you wil win."

(以下略)

アングリックに ルールの 変更が あったのかどうかは わかりませんが、完全に べつもの に なっています。

マジック e の パターン に よる つづりも、ところどころに つかわれています。

語末の -er の "e" を 省略します。--- considr(consider), matrs(matters), sufr(suffer).

New Spelling (Nue Speling)

「ニュースペリング」は、イギリスの the Simplified Spelling Society (SSS) とアメリカの the Simpler Spelling Association (SSA) による つづり字改革案 です。

つづり字改革という ことばで おおくのひとが 連想する 改革案の 典型例です。

一定の 表記に 一定の 読みかたを きめて 一貫性を 重視した 表記法です。

代表的な 母音については、「短音」は a, e, i, o, u で、「長音」は ae, ee, ie, oe, ue で 表記します。

マジック e のパターンは 完全排除。読まない 文字は 書きません。二重子音字も rr 以外は つかいません。

ただし、かつての The Simplified Spelling Society は、名称をThe English Spelling Societyに 変更しており、同団体は 現在 この案を 支持も 推進も していません。

アメリカの SSA は、現在では the American Literacy Council として 存続しており、「サウンドスペル」を 支持する 団体です。

R iz dubld aafter short a, o, u: karry, sorry, hurry.

New Spelling (1956)
(Statement on the Agreement reached between the British S.S.S. and the American S.S.A.)
http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/books/ns1956.php

If desired also kwie.et (quiet), as well as child.hood (childhood) foot.hold (foothold) などのように なります。

"y" の文字は つねに 「ヨッド」の音 /j/ のみを あらわすことと なり、語末の -y は -i で 表記されることに なります。(SoundSpel では、y を /j/ にも 語末の -y /-i/ にも もちいる。)

さて、New Spelling は、さらに 若干の ルール修正が みとめられています。

1971/72 New Spelling Amendments.
http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/j7/potpourri.php

Resolutions II 1971.
1. <dh> to be removed, <th> to represent <th> in both that, thick etc.
2. <oo-uu> to be reversed, thus guud food, fuul moon etc.
3. Alternativs aafter/after, baath/bath to hav a singl <a>: after, bath, pas, gras etc.

4. Replace ue, uer, ueth, Uel, uerself by yoo, yoor, yooth, Yool, yoorsey. But u to be used for you (yoo = yew).
5. For children, a ligature to be inserted during the learning stage only: consonants <ch, sh, thin, this, wh, zh, ng>, vowels <aa, ae, ee, oe, oo, ie, oi, ou, ue, nu>.

Resolutions III 1972
1. Double <r> to follow the five short vowels (formerly restricted to <arr, orr, urr>. Thus karri, horrible, hurri, and now also cherri, lirrik etc.
(Note: the idea was to make a tidy rule: all five short vowels have a following <r> doubled: <arr, err, irr, orr, urr, - SG)
2. Adoption of <o> for the long sound at the end of words: tomato, kaliko etc.
3. Adoption of wur insted of wer, to line up with hur, sur, fur, stur, blur etc; thus eliminating wer as a wordsign.

つまり、だいたい つぎのような 感じ です。

dh を つかわないことに して、th を 有声子音でも 無声子音でも つかうようにする。(both, that, thick など)

uu/u:/ と oo/U/ の つかいわけが 逆転して、uu/U/ と oo/u:/ のように なった。(guud food, fuul moon など。fool muun よりは まし。)

いままで aa で 表記しても a で 表記しても よかった 部分を a 一文字で 表記する。(after, bath, pas, gras など)

ue, uer, ueth, Uel, uerself を yoo, yoor, yooth, Yool, yoorsey(yoorselfか?) のように 書く。ただし、u は you を あらわすために つかい、yoo は yew のことである。

ただし、New Spelling 90 では つぎのように 変わります。

Of the words beginning with y, you, and youth could be spelt ue and ueth respectively. However, we prefer yoo and yooth to maintain the connections with your and young.
y で はじまる 単語のうち、you と youth は、それぞれ ue, ueth と 書くことも できよう。しかしながら、your や young との つながりを 維持するために yoo, yooth (のように 書くこと)を このむ。

5つの母音字 a, e, i, o, u が「短音」のとき r は 二重化して rr と する。(かつては -arr-, -orr-, -urr- のみに 制限されていた。今後は karri, horrible, hurri に くわえて cherri, lirrik なども rr を 使用。)

ただし、New Spelling 90 に なる と、r は 決して 二重化することは なく、-rr- は 使用しない。

語末の「長音」の o は、-oe ではなく -o を採用。tomato, kaliko など。

ワードサインとしての wer (were) を wur とする。hur, sur, fur, stur, blur などと 歩調を あわせる。

New Spelling 90

New Spelling 90 には、Nue Speling とは ことなる 点が いくつか あります。

「アイ」の音を ie ではなく y で 表記します。つまり、ae, ee, ie, oe, ue ではなく、ae, ee, y, oe, ue です。つづり が すこしだけ みじかく なります。iron と yearn が おなじ つづり(yern)に なります。

"er" か "ur" かで まようことなく、"er" で 統一します。concur と conquer は つづりが おなじに なります。

"r" は 二重には しません。(r is not changed, but it needs attention. We formulate a rule that r is retained wherever it occurs in current spelling, except of course that rr is reduced to single r.)

New Spelling 90.
http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/pamflets/p12ns90.php

--- Nue Speling とは ことなり、th の 有声音・無声音の 表記上の くべつを しません。(ゆえに、発音が ことなる thy と thigh の つづりの くべつは 不可能。either と ether も 米音では おなじ つづり か?)

--- 屈折語尾の s については、有声音・無声音の 表記上の くべつを する 必要は ない。

http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/pamflets/p12ns90.php#s

--- -ce と -se の場合は、-s ではなく -ss を つかうことに なっています。cease は seess で、sees は そのまま です。princes が prinses で、princess が prinsess と なります。

needless の ss も 必要です。needles が needls で、needless が needles では、ちょっと 混乱します。

それと、-ce と -se を -ss で おきかえるのであれば、once は wunss と 書くべきです。

y の 2種類の 用法について --- 語頭では y/j/、他の場合は y/ai/

y. Although we have used y as a vowel, we have retained it as an initial consonant in words like yet, year, young, youth. This dual use is not ideal, but y's usefulness as a vowel outweighs the disadvantages. Of the words beginning with y, you, and youth could be spelt ue and ueth respectively. However, we prefer yoo and yooth to maintain the connections with your and young.

http://www.spellingsociety.org/journals/pamflets/p12ns90.php#digrafs

ただし、two と too は 両方とも too に なる。」

せっかくなので 一貫性の ためにも、類推で、full や pull だけでなく、bull の u の母音も そのままに しておいてほしいと おもいます。

スコットランド人が oo の 2種類の 発音の くべつを しないとしても、bool と bull の つづりの くべつ は する はず です。

ちなみに、soot と suit の場合は、soot を そのままに して、suit を 英国発音寄りに suet と 書きます。そして、従来の suet は sueet に なってしまいます。

Neytoe Inglish

「エイ」「イー」「アイ」「オウ」「ユー」を ay, ey, iy, oe, ue で 表記します。シュワーは u で 表記されます。

http://www.angelfire.com/wa/derludwig/ingglic.html

Restored English Spelling

「エイ」「イー」「アイ」「オウ」「ユー」

"Restored English Spelling" では、つぎのように なります。
ai, ee, y, oa, ue --- 子音字の前
ay, e, I/y, o, u --- それ以外の場合

http://web.archive.org/web/20120214072204/http://victorian.fortunecity.com/vangogh/555/Spell/

The "long" or free vowels in RES would be represented as aieeyoaue in situations where they need to be distinguished from checked vowels, i.e., when followed by a consonant.  Otherwise they would be represented as ayeI/you as in say, me, I/my, silo, guru.  Hence:  "I say nu boy go tel me wot u se."  RES looks mor lyk English becaus it employs positiona'l speling, just lyk TO.

リンクさき では、POATAYTO (RES spelling) の よう に なっていたが、ai が 子音字 の まえ、ay が それ以外 なので、"poataito" の はず。

https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/archive/index.php/t-197864.html には、つぎのように かいてありました。

RES (Restored English Spelling) spells it POATAYTO.
RES uses positional spelling, the [owe] sound in the terminal position is spelled O.

/ou/ は、子音字の まえ では oa、さいご なら o で つづる。

では、oasis は? oaaisis か?

The Star (H G Wells)

It was on the first day of the new year that the announcement was made, almost simultaneously from three observatories, that the motion of the planet Neptune, the outermost of all the planets that wheel about the sun, had become very erratic. A retardation in its velocity had been suspected in December. Then a faint, remote speck of light was discovered in the region of the perturbed planet. At first this did not cause any great excitement. Scientific people, however, found the intelligence remarkable enough even before it became known that the new body was rapidly growing larger and brighter, and that its motion was quite different from the orderly progress of the planets.
